INTRODUCE KJ? WHERE DO WE START?! This is a tough one.. :)

Meet KJ (He/They) & The Back 2 Basiks Team

Hi, I’m KJ — Founder/Director of Back 2 Basiks Therapeutic Recreation Services, Academie Middle Ground, and Alternative Roads Childcare, alongside my amazing wife & Support Team. We’re based in Langley Township. BC, where we’ve created a warm, supportive, and dynamic environment for kids and youth who thrive outside the “typical” box.

We specialize in respite, overnight programs, weekend camps, and adaptive recreational services for neurodiverse kiddos, children with sensitive nervous systems, and those needing extra support to feel seen, safe, and successful. Our programs include:

  • Equine experience camps

  • Small group adaptive riding

  • Swimming clubs

  • Outdoor adventure days

  • Martial arts sessions

  • Creative therapeutic recreation experiences

We offer support and adaptations tailored to the unique sensory and emotional needs of each child. Whether it’s a soft place to land or a brave space to grow, our programs are grounded in belonging, connection, and authenticity.

A Bit About Us:

  • I (KJ) am neurodivergent myself — a proud Twice Exceptional (2E) human — and bring both professional training and lived experience to our work.

  • I’m known for being silly, compassionate, and predictably unpredictable — and I love nothing more than building trusting relationships with kids and youth who need safe adults in their corner.

  • My wife is a toddler wrangler extraordinaire and has a gift for connecting with children aged 18 months to 7 years.

  • We both LOVE BABIES! (Who doesn’t)

  • I specialize in working with tweens and middle school youth (ages 8–15) and mentoring/working with Kiddos navigating complex needs and big feelings.

Our Approach:

We are approved adoptive parents and currently provide relief and respite care for families on weekends and school closure days. We’ve been approved for contracted respite through multiple agencies and are in the process of supporting Indigenous families in the Fraser Valley in collaboration with Xyólheméylh. We also plan to foster through MCFD in the near future. We both have worked EXTENSIVELY with Children with all types of Neurological Atypical Development. (ASD,ADHD,ODD,FASD)

We have a 3-bedroom home with 4 beds and currently no young people living in the home at this time (our teen is currently pursuing young adult goals and independent living).

Our home is cozy, flexible, and trauma-aware — built around connection, routine, and play.

Why We Do This:

From 2019 to 2025, I had the privilege of mentoring an incredible group of kids who have since moved into our TAY (Transitioning to Adulthood Youth) Program. Many of these young people now support our younger mentees and attend community programs that once felt inaccessible.

This is the heart of what we do:
Meeting kids exactly where they are and creating spaces where they can BELONG, BE SEEN, and FEEL SAFE.

As someone who grew up in care, I carry this work in my bones. That’s why we make it a priority to accommodate Children in Care (CIC) in our programs — and we fight hard to make sure cost is never the reason a child misses out on these experiences.

Let’s Connect:

We’re always excited to connect with families, agencies, and fellow humans who are walking the path of compassion, inclusion, and creative care. Whether you're looking for recreation support, mentorship, or just someone who "gets it" — we’d love to hear from you.

Oh The Places You’ll Go…

My Vision has not always been Clear, I have done Childcare for over 10 years Supporting Children with ADHD, ODD, Autism and Low Socio-Economic Status.

I was happy, Pretty Healthy and then.. In 2015 MVA happened and Rocked my World. Adding to my Already Complicated profile of a person: a Brain Injury, Ocular Disorder, Chronic Pain and an Alphabet Soup of Technical Conditions to Explain all of it.

My brain SCREAMED at me when a toddler tantrumed, babies cried, and after 1.5 years of Therapy I quit. How would I ever make a difference like this?I’m no good.. I’m out of Shape.. I am BrokenI’m Worthless without my Defining Skillset.. the pressure to perform I once held myself to in comparison to others ate at me as I gave it all away.. or so I thought..

Well… Here I am. OVER 10 YEARS later.. Struggling my Ass off; in the eyes of the Public, Failing, having tough days, pushing through my struggles, showing up to hold space, being real with what I can handle and most of all? Being that person I always wanted to be for someone else.

I show up in whatever ways I can.. because this life? There has to be a reason to live it.. and these kids? I can tell you from personal experience, The harder they are to love, the more love they need. <3 <3 <3 <3
